General Gameplay
With typical gameplay style of other Watch Dogs the game is all open world from your Dedsec base to the scenes of London and the people. In this open world game there is no hero, but who you recruit as being the hero(s) for Dedsec. The game is all about open world exploration and recruitment of new members for Dedsec from the population of London. In this series rather then having one hero there are multiple hero’s that you can choose from based on who you recruit for the cause. The Game Visuals for Watch Dogs: Legion are fantastic. Everything in the game is very detailed in the game from the characters, backgrounds, animation of the city and everything else is very detailed in its presentation. The game goes in great detail in the graphics of the game to showcase London as a living city with people walking driving and going about their business. The games colors are very bright and vivid to show a city that is very futuristic in its design with drones flying around, automatic cars driving itself and the paramilitary around the city doing what they are doing in the game. The game does have a colorblind mode and it is fully supported for those that suffer from a colorblind status and the colors can be adjusted to make the colors to see easier. The game also has a lot of graphic content for the action in the game and it is also shown in full detail. The game is presented in both 1080P and in 4K and Watch Dogs: Legion is great to see in either format. For those that own a PS5 or an Xbox One Series X the game has an update to showcase the graphics in even more detail In our play testing we did not run into any issues with the graphics in either setting and the upgrade graphics for the new consoles even make the game look amazing. Audio in Watch Dogs: Legion is done very well. As with the game being an sandbox game, all of the sounds that you would expect to hear in the game from the sounds of the city, to people talking, cars driving around as well the drones flying around. All of the radios are playing different songs and podcasts that are in the game and Watch Dogs: Legion does a great job bringing the city to life via the audio that is in the game. The game has spoken dialog for both the in game characters, to non playable characters and other in game elements. Watch Dogs: Legion story is told with the characters speaking and the voice acting is very spot on and does a great job telling the story. The game soundtrack fits well for the game and is music that is what you would hear in London. As the game is a M – for Mature title, there is a lot of language and slang that is primary used in London. The game is presented in 5.1 and in stereo surround sound and both settings are perfect to hear the game in. If you are planning to play the game using a gaming headset, we recommend adjusting the game sounds to best experience the game and all of the sounds from it. In our play testing, outside of the language in the game the sounds, spoken dialog are all special needs friendly. Controls in Watch Dogs: Legion are done well. The game has several different styles to play the game from on foot, to driving, and flying drones and all controls settings are very easy to pick up and play. As the game is an sandbox title, one of the defining things for a game like Watch Dogs: Legion the controls, and Ubisoft did a great job of the controls to make it easy for anyone to pick up and play. Even in the beginning of the game, there is a tutorial to explain of how to move, shoot and hack in the game and easily to learn how to play the game. The driving is very smooth and easy to control the cars in game as well as flying the drones and going up and down, forward and backwards. Watch Dogs: Legion is a very friendly pick up and play game for anyone to play. In our play testing, we did not run into any issue with the game controls and the game controls well in game. As the game is a console title, the standard controller is fine to use to play Watch Dogs: Legion.
“A great sandbox title where you can play as anyone and almost do anything in the game, however without a solid hero in the game, you can get lost on who is the true hero is in the game. Also, some technical issues can hamper the gameplay.”
Family Friendly
Watch Dogs: Legion is interesting in the sense as rather you play as a preset hero, you go and recruit regular heroes from London to be part of Dedsec. This is a interesting style of gameplay as where an ordinary person in the game becomes a weapon wielding, drone and car hacking war machine, which can become a hit or miss thing for the game. Now the game does a great job of showcasing why this is a good system, but as the game encourages you to play to your play style. So if you are a stealth player, you can customize your agent and gear towards this play style, or to others gamers that are ore run and gun this game allows you to customize your gear for this. Now normally this is a not a bad way to create a sandbox game but because of how you can freely recruit different people in the game the character development in the game game gets lost. In most games you stick to one character from start to finish and that’s fine as you get to see the story unfold in the game story of why is the main character motivation to do what they are doing in the game, but as you change characters, it is all about the favors that you do to get them to join Dedsec and they repaying the favor in turn. Now this is a part of the game but at times it is a lot of “fetch” missions to get this and download that in order to progress in the game. One of the many things that lack in the game is diversity in mission styles. Now don’t get it wrong there are several diverse missions but when in comparison to the first two Watch Dogs games there is a big difference in Watch Dogs: Legions. Now if anything the story for the game is very well done and interesting to keep your invested in the game but it is the lack of strong hero characters that changes the dynamics to the game. Now some gamers will love having a roster to play as but when the game is more story driven but not strong characters that the story is being told gets lost in the game. In our play through, we mostly stuck to one or two agents that had special abilities that were towards our play but this is also a bad thing as most will not sway to other characters unless that specific character is needed for a mission. The voice acting is very strong in the game and helps drives the game and the computer AI that helps you is very funny in his lines, and these are the strong points of the game and help with the story so for those gamers playing the game this is a big plus for Watch Dogs: Legion. Another big part of the game is the side missions outside of recruiting people for Dedsec. There are tons of collectibles and finding these alone is a great way to spend time in the game. Also the game offers a lot of different customizations for the characters, the clothing options also allow you to dress your current agent the way that most people dress in London. Another good aspect of the game is the in game soundtrack. The game music is a perfect fit for the game as this is music that you would hear if you are in London. This is a strong point for Watch Dogs: Legion as the soundtrack is the strong driving force in the game. The music in the car or in the gaming world fits perfects for the game and it is a true joy to hear in the game. Overall Watch Dogs: Legion is a great game for those that love Sandbox games. The side missions alone is fun to play, the gadgets that you use are fun to use in the game as well are fitted to the play style of your type of gaming. The agents that you can recruit is very diverse and you can tailor who you want to get to be on your team. The ability to change on the fly in between missions is also a good thing for those that want to experiment with different team members. The only only complaint that we have with the game is some technical issues within the game. Now these glitches will be fixed via patches but some of them can be annoying when playing the game. As the game is rated M – For Mature, the level of language and violence in the game is more to tell the story and not overused. So we recommend gamers that are of the age of 15 and older that this game will be ok for them to play the game. In our special needs game testing, we did not encounter anything from the game graphics, audio or controls. The game is ver special needs gaming friendly.
Closing
Watch Dogs: Legion is a great sandbox game for those that either love sandbox games or the Watch Dogs series. Without a main character to play as the game can get lost in the story but the ability to play as anyone is still a fun experience. A must have game for anyone that love story driven games or fans of the Watch Dogs series.
NOTE: As the time of this review and this bug with the Xbox One Series X there is a save glitch where progress in the game is not being saved when playing the game on the Series X. There is a bug being worked on but at this time take caution when playing the game on the Series X. A work around at this time is to play it on the Xbox One and once the game is patched then move onto the Series X.
