Vampire Survivors is a top down, survival game in which you choose a character and fight off endless waves of enemies within a 15- or 30-minute time limit.
General Gameplay
As with rogue like survivor games out there, you choose your character and go into a level to fight off enemies and while trying to upgrade your weapons and defense, and trying to find more secrets to each level.
Vampire Survivors is a time-based rouge like survival game where go into each level, survive as long as you can, get all the power ups and other secret items in the level and die by the hands of death. Each level has its own unique style, enemies, and items to search for. As you progress through the game, there will be many new characters and abilities to use on your next playthrough. Game Visuals in Vampire Survivors are done in a 8-bit style where everything from the main characters, enemies, backgrounds and other items are all done in this style to give it a retro style and feel. The colors are very bright and vivid, easy to see on the screen with all that is going on during gameplay. Vampire Survivors does a great job in the graphical area with the game’s look and feel. Audio in Vampire Survivors is fun to listen to as it is also done in a retro style. As the game draws its influence from a famous vampire hunting game the music is on point and fits the look and feel of each level. The sound effects are also easy to hear with each weapon or defense ability having its own unique sound in the game. As the game is going for a retro look and feel, the sound is in 2.0 stereo, however those that play in a surround sound environment should not have any issues hearing the action in the game. Controls in Vampire Survivors is very easy to use and play in the game. As the game only needs the left thumb stick to control the character, there is only one input button used in the game and in the menu area. As the game is designed in a simple playing manner, this controller setup is ideal for the game and playing it. In our playtesting, we did not see any issues playing the game as the controller setup is very easy to use.
“Vampire Survivors is a overall fun that that will have you coming back for more on each gameplay. The simple pick up and play game mechanics, easy to play and just so much to discover, this is a game that should not be missed and a must have for any digital gaming library.”
Family Friendly
Vampire Survivors is a simple but complex game at a same time, which is not a bad thing. So let me explain, lol. As the game is a pick your character, survive, and collect as many power ups as possible. The game controls allow you to just use one thumb stick to move and dodge around the level, as attacks are automatic in the game it is all about knowing which weapons and upgrades are best suited for your character and their skills. When the level progresses so does your upgrades and all the coins that you get go towards permanent upgrades that help or make the game more aggressive on your next run. Each character is unique and have their own strengths and weakness that you must keep in mind as each level is different and as one character may be great for a level, they may not fair so much on the next one. The cast of characters that you find, purchase or earn in the game will help in this as there are so many different types of characters in the game to choose from. This is one of the many great aspects of the game as there is so much replay value to the game. The graphics are in 8 bit, however this is on purpose as we during the review felt that the developer was writing a love letter to the Castlevania series and they did a great job doing this. The game audio also is well done. All of the level background music and general sounds are done to fit the game and its feel when playing the game. As you progress in the game, you can also choose other level music that you like the most. This dynamic also gives the gamer more control on what tracks that they want to listen to. Overall the sound of the game is very similar to the sounds that you would hear from the Castlevania series, but with its unique style to give this game that feel. Vampire Survivors is just a fun game to play. Anyone that loves games that is all about survival, wash, rinse, and repeat then you will be at home with this. The game is very easy to pick up and play and all ages can play the game without any problems. The only complaint that we had is that there is no tutorial or how to play to tell you what to do and that all of the game is about discovery and just experiment with different combinations of weapons and defense abilities. Vampire Survivors is a game that allows you to play as you want. For example if you want to play with a faster character, you can, its all about the correct weapons and defense that you set up. And another aspect of the game that we enjoyed is that the game has so many secrets to discover that you will spend countless hours on a certain level just to get all of the collectibles and unlockables in the game. Overall this is great game and we highly recommend picking this up, no matter if you played these types of games or not, Vampire Survivors is a game that deserves a spot in your digital library. In our special needs game testing, outside of the learning curve, there was nothing that would impede any gameplay for any gamers, if anything the game is very special needs gaming friendly. Overall this a great game and series and should not be missed for any gamer.
