Super Destronaut DX-2 is a retro style shooter that takes its inspiration from Space Invaders. With 5 different game modes, lots of special lighting effects and easy controls this is a family friendly top-down shooter.
General Gameplay
Super Destronaut DX-2 is a direct sequel to the original game with the same name. In the sequel the game is more of a top-down shooter where you shoot waves of enemies that are coming at you. Super Destronaut DX-2 offers different game modes to choose from. Super Destronaut DX-2 takes its inspiration from the Space Invaders series. The Game Visuals are very bright and vivid on the screen. As you would expect from the game visual design it borrows from an 8-bit style in its design of the ships, backgrounds, and other visual assets on the screen. All the colors that you would expect from a game like this are there, from the bright neon colors green, red, yellow, blue and so forth are there in a vivid fashion. As the game is very colorful there are some modes in the options to take away some of the background shaking during gameplay. As the game has vibrant colors on the screen, there is no colorblind mode in the game settings, however when playing the game, we did have some testers that had a hard time seeing some of the red and green colors in the game. In our playtesting, outside of the colorblindness issue that some testers experienced, we did not see anything offensive to younger gamers or gamers overall. Audio in Super Destronaut DX-2 again is what you would expect from a 8-bit style of a game, mostly midi sounds from music to sound effects for the game. The background music is great for the game as it adds music that you would hear in a shooter. The sound effects are typical of what you would hear in a shooter from laser fire to enemy’s weapons fire, explosions and other sounds that are included in a shooter. The game is presented in both 5.1 surround sound as well 2.0 stereo sound and either sound setting is fine for the game. In our playtesting, we did not encounter any issues with the game audio and found it to be very family friendly. Controls in Super Destronaut DX-2 are very simple to use and easy to pick up and play for anyone. As the game is controlled with the left thumb stick, there are two buttons used for the game, one for firing your weapon and another to slow down time to better aim your shot and dodge enemies and their fire. As this is a shooter the controller setup is fine for the game. As the game is on the console there is no need for a special controller for the game and the standard controller for Super Destronaut DX-2 is fine for the game. In our playtesting, we did not encounter any issues with the controller settings or gameplay, the game is very family friendly.
“A basic but fun shooter for those that want to play something fun but easy to play.”
Family Friendly
This was an interesting review as most of the reviewers old and young are shooter fans here and this was met with some mixed reaction. More seasoned shooter fans found the game to be to basic and elementary in its design, however for more casual fans of shooters they liked it. Super Destronaut DX-2 is a basic game in its design and gameplay, but this is not a bad thing. This game is meant to be played as a game for those looking for a casual game to play in between games to destress. As the gameplay is simple but easy to play this is a great game for gamers that want to play with younger or older casual gamers that do not want to have a challenging game to play but something simple and fun to pass the time. The only complaint that we had with the game was that we wished that there were more modes to play as well as couch co-op so two gamers can play the game at the same time. Also, one thing that concerned us was that the game red/green colors were at times hard to see on the screen. This this does not take away from the game but something to consider when playing the game. In our special needs game testing outside of the red/green issues that we saw there was nothing that we saw with the game visuals, audio, or controls. If anything, the game is very special needs gaming friendly.
Closing
Super Destronaut DX-2 is a fun, casual shooter that is very easy to pick up and play. Great for fans of casual shooters but more serious shooter may find the game to be too easy.
