You are slime, well you are San that is slime, and as slime you must go through this tough as nails platformer from level to level in a quest to get out of a giant worm that swallowed you or get destroyed by his stomach acid.
General Gameplay
You are a piece of slime that was swallowed by a giant worm and you are trying to get out of its stomach, but the way that you do this is where the fun comes in. The Game Visuals for Slime-San are very 8 bits in its design. It has a very colorful pallet of lighter colors from mostly greens and other light colors that make up the world. The graphics as very easy to see on the screen, even thought they look small you can zoom into the action for a more detail look at the game environment. The red, green in the game that is mostly present, is very easily seen and as the red blocks cause a in game fail, the green ones can be pass through when using your in-game abilities. As the game is supposed to be the inside of a worm, we did not see too many things that would be offensive in the game, however we would recommend that the gaming age should be around 9 years and older because of the content. One thing that we would recommend for Nintendo Switch gamers is that it is best to play this on the big screen for longer gaming sessions as it is easier on the eyes. Slime-San Audio is also very retro in its style. With a lot of synth-pop in its level music, it adds a more upbeat style to the levels and gives it a very retro feeling when playing from level to level. The sound effects are also basic and to the point as well, from the smile hitting the walls, to jumps, and other in game objects are all very clear to hear and easy to know what is going on in the game. In our play testing, we did not hear anything offensive when playing the game. As there is no surround sound supported in the game, it sounds great in stereo. We recommend that using headphones while playing on the Nintendo Switch as the background music can get a little loud. Again parents/guardians be sure to take care of headphones usage and extended gaming sessions. The Controls for Slime-San are very on point. With the left thumb stick to move, a jump button, and shoulder buttons to do special actions, Slime-San is very easy to pick up and play the game. One thing about challenging platform games are that the controls must be very tight and responsive as the action can get intense on the screen, so should be your inputs on the controller. In our play testing, we did not meet any issues with the controller or even button layout as it was perfect to play a game style like this. As the game does not need any special controllers, we did notice that for longer gaming sessions that the using the Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons can get a little stiff, and would recommend either using a Pro Controller or taking a break in between levels.
“A tough as nails platform game but Slime-San is a challenging game that allows for even new gamers to play at their pace”
Family Friendly
Let’s address the elephant in the room and get this out of the way. Slime-San is a hard game, but a very fun game once you get used to how the game mechanics works. The game has so many levels, a new game + and a boss rush mode that even the most hardcore platform fans in your gaming family will have more than enough to play in Slime-San. Did I mention that the game has over 100 levels and with each level that is made of 400 rooms! Some may feel that the gameplay may get stale, however we have play Slime-San here in our office for over 10+ hours now and still feel that the game content is still fresh. Of the many joys of the game is that the ability of the game to be approachable to play. Even for non-hardcore platforming fans, the game was fun to play. In our playtesting, everyone from young to old loved the game, felt that there was challenge but not so hard that it was frustrating. When it comes to punishing platformers, they are a major turn off for most casual gamers, however with Slime-San this was not the case. Our older gamers in our gaming family that are not even fans of the “punishing platform” series loved the game and felt that the game had a lot to offer. This is a great game for anyone that is looking for a challenging game but not to challenging. In our special needs game testing we did not run into any issues with the gameplay, sound, and controls, however some of our gamers did have a little bit of a hard time seeing the greens and reds in the game. This was a minor thing but still something to look out for when allowing gamers that have issues seeing red and green. Also, in the game as you go through the levels, you can unlock some gameplay elements that will allow two players to play, as this as in between, however still a nice bonus. The only thing that we have notice that some of the graphics as they are designed to be 8-Bit that it is hard to see on the screen, but there is a zoom feature that allows you to be more accurate in the game. Our best recommendation is that if you have a gamer in your gaming family that is a fan of challenging or even a fun platformer, Slime-San is a great addition to your digital library. We highly recommend this game for the Nintendo Switch owners as it is one of the most addictive platformers out there.
