Rad Rogers: World One

Rad a gamer and one night he is sucked into his TV and his gaming console where he is the star of his game, with the help of Dusty a video game character he must find a way out of this world.  In this 2D platformer that is mostly inspired by 90’s gaming.

General Gameplay

The game is an old school 2D run and gun style platformer.  In Rad Rogers it’s all about getting parts of a key and reaching the next level.  There are enemies that are in the game in which you can pick up power ups and defeat enemies and bossed throughout the worlds in the game.  You also get a chance with Dusty to go to glitch areas and fix the glitch so Rad can progress in the level.    The Game Visuals for Rad Rogers are very detailed.  Everything is visible from the main characters, backgrounds, enemies, and all other characters in the game.  The game has a lot of colors that are vibrant and easily seen on the screen, as the game does not support a colorblind mode, we did not see many issues with the reds/greens in the game, however on some monitors we had to adjust the colors so some of our gamers were able to see them, again this is a very minor issue and easily fixed.  As the game is a M rated game, we did not see any nudity in the game but there was just 90’s style of video game violence and when defeating enemies, the do explode in blood and there are some instances of graphical words used in the text in which makes it more of a mature title.  The game Audio is an infusion of 90’s style of background music that you would hear in a game from that era.  From the gunfire, to the enemies and background is all like a 90’s style of game.  The game has voice overs, and this is one of the major reasons why the game received a M rated.  There is a lot of graphic language, however as the game does have a censor mode, most if not all the language can be censored.  This allows gamers in your family to better enjoy the game without hearing the language in the game.  The game is also in 5.1 surround sound and sounds well in 5.1 or even a headset.  In our playtesting, we did play the game with and without the M rated content censored and have to say that it makes not much of a difference how you play the game.  I personally would say that the game is more aimed at gamers that grew up in the 90’s playing video games and for those that are more mature gamers.  Again parents you can turn off the language and teen and gamers 11 and up can enjoy the game, however we would highly advise strong caution and supervision if doing so.  The Controls for Rad Rogers is set up with it being a twin stick style of shooter.  The left thumb stick controls the character, where the right thumb stick is to aim the weapon.  There is a jump button, as well to use a slam feature for Dusty.  The controls are designed for gamers to use it as a shooter.  This controller setup makes a lot of sense as the game nature matches the controller settings.  The game is very easy to pick up and play for any gamers, platform shooter fan or not.  In our playthrough of the game, none of our gamers experienced any issues with the game control setting what so ever.  We were able to test the game both on the PC and console and have to say that if you are going to game on the PC it is best to use a controller as it makes the gameplay must easier.  The game also does not need any special controller, so you should be ok playing the game without any issues with the standard controller.

“Rad Rogers is a great classic style platformer game that pays tribute to 90’s still shooting platform games. However, with the graphic language, and more mature tone it is more for the older audience of gamers.”

Family Friendly

As the game is a M rating to say that the game is not family friendly is an unfair assessment of Rad Rogers.  It does offer a choice to turn off the language equally making it into a T rating in its style.  What it all boils down to is who in your gaming family is going to play it, how much of a fan are they of 90’s style of gameplay, or platforming shooters, or even just crude humor in the story and game.  One of the fun aspects of Rad Rogers is that it is a fun shooter that does have a lot of depth to it.  With four different gun types and lots of enemies to shoot, a shooter fan will love this game.  Also for mature gamers in your gaming family the uncensored audio is funny, but again the comedy is for more mature audiences.  Rad Rogers is fun game, but a game that is meant for an older audience, so if you have gamers in your gaming family that love shooters, and crude humor in the story, this is the game for them.  Now when it comes to younger gamers, I would not recommend anyone under the age of 15 to play the game.  The language and subject matter alone is very mature and from our testing here in the office we felt that this was a good age for younger gamers.  (Again, this is based on parent permission/participation as well supervision of teen gamers playing the game in our office) Yes you can turn off the language but honestly the game loses its charm and humor when this is off.  If you are planning to pick up the game, we recommend watching some gameplay footage via YouTube.com or even picking up the demo and trying it out.  Our guidelines are measured with keeping all family members in mind and again we feel that gamers that are 15 and over are best suited for a game like this.  In our special needs game testing, we did not meet any issues with the game graphics, sound, audio, or even controls.  The gamers actually loved how the game captured the 90’s style of gameplay and humor.  So again if you have an older gamer in your gaming family that loves shooters like this, this is a great game to pick up for your digital library.
