General Gameplay
Prehistoric Dudu is a 2D, 8-bit, Metroidvania action adventure game where you go from area to area finding new power ups, and abilities to explore other areas as well as inaccessible areas in the game with your new found abilities. The Game Visuals for Prehistoric Dude are all done in 8-bit graphics to give the game a look and feel of a retro 80’s game. Everything from the characters to backgrounds and everything in between is created in 8-bit visuals which gives it charm for those that are fans of retro games. The colors are very bright and easy to see as the color choices again were towards a warmer color pallet, so the game has warmer colors like reds, greens, yellows and other bright colors that are present in the game. The game does not have a color-blind mode, but the game is easily enough to see in motion. In our play testing of Prehistoric Dude, we did not see anything that would be offensive to younger gamers and the game is very family friendly. Audio in Prehistoric Dude is also in an 8-bit fashion. As you would expect to hear from an 8-bit game, well everything in the game from in game sounds to the background music is done in 8-bit MIDI style. So, there is no spoken audio in the game as the game story unfolds from new areas and their visual designs to boss battles. Overall, this is done on purpose to give more of the retro feel to the game. The game is presented in stereo 2.0 and we have tried it on a 5.1 surround sound and the game sounds great in either setting. In our play testing, we did not hear or encounter any issues where the game would not be appropriate for younger gamers, if anything the sound is very family friendly. Controls in Prehistoric Dude are quite easy to pick up and play the game. As it is following its 8-bit theme the game has you controlling the dude with the left thumb stick, and a jump button, attack, and another button for your special. The controller setting is quite easy to get used to as the game is designed in both its thumb stick and button layout that this was its design to be easy to play. In our playtesting none of our testers had any issues with the controller settings or gameplay. If anything, Prehistoric Dude is very family friendly in its controller settings.
“Very easy gameplay, easy controls and overall retro 8-bit fun, this is a great game for those that love Metroidvania style of games.”
Family Friendly
Of the charming things about Prehistoric Dude is that it is a get fun game to play, especially for those gamers out there that love Metroidvania style of games. The game does not take itself seriously and it is all about easy combat with a mixture of the Metroidvania style of gameplay. If anything, the game is more of an Metroidvania lite of a game. With platforming being common from the 8-bit era of gaming, the platforming is extremely easy to get used to, especially easier once you get power ups to help you in the game. This allows you to reach places in previously you were not able to. The game boss battles are not too hard and amazingly easy to beat the bosses one you get used to their patters a then can defeat them. The game is not that long but play time is around 3-4 hours to complete the game. Overall, this is a great game for gamers that are looking to just blow steam and have an easy night of gaming. This is a great game for those gamers that either wanted to learn how to play Metroidvania style of gamers or those that want to play a fun action/platformer style of game. This is a fun family game to have for your digital library and even though the game is rated E10 – Everyone 10 and Up, there is little to no violence in Prehistoric Dude where we felt that the game should have been fine for all ages. The only complaint that we had about Prehistoric Dude was that there were some harder platforming areas but this was easily fixed with trial an error in the game, outside of this, the game is very well done for a retro style game. In our special needs game testing, we did not encounter any issues with the game visuals, audio, or the control settings. The game is very special needs gaming friendly.
