2019 Video Game Holiday Gift Guide

Now that the holidays are approaching us quickly, we wonder what to get that gamer in our lives for the holidays.  Now as most will post a holiday gift guide with great toys, games and other goodies, we have to realize that our gamers live in a digital world that changes everyday.  So as this world is a dynamic changing world, we to in out gift giving also have to change in our giving ways to the ones that we love.  One of the biggest things that gamers love is games, but in this world where most if not all AAA blockbusters come out around the holidays, it becomes hard to find the right gift for that gamer.  Also if you are planning to pick up a specific game, you can run into issues where either another friend/family member or they themselves may have already purchased the game or the rare thing that can happen is that the gamer may not want that game or DLC that is out.  So what do you do, give cash? Ask them and risk spoiling the gift? Do nothing and be a bah humbug? LOL no but here are some very easy and stress free ideas that you can do digitally for those gamers in your gaming live.

Now before you dismiss digital, let me tell you why this is the way to go.  You can easily get a nice holiday card and place the digital code into the card.  When it comes to gamers, digital is the way to go with most games.  Most games that are still able to be purchased still have to be installed and all DLC (Downloadable Content) is all digital.  If anything, in the past 3 years alone, digital sales have risen an %82 percent with gamers as the primary means of getting new games and content.  Also most popular games that gamers play (Fortnite, COD, etc…) are digital games that start off digital and continue to be prime on their respected platforms.  So here are some ideas for gamers that play on their specific platforms and good dollar amounts to purchase to make it the perfect gift.

Gamers that play on the Xbox One:

If your gamer that you have to get a gift for plays on the Xbox One, there are some great options that you can go with to get them the best gift.

Xbox One Gamers

Xbox One Game Pass – Imagine having like a “Netflix” style system that you can check out new games (up to 100 per month) that you can download, play, beat, and then uninstall without any major commitment.  This is a new model that Microsoft is going with in combination with their Xbox Live.  Yes $14.99 a month is a little steep but when you think of the fact that you are getting a lot of games, also the ability to play new games as long as you like, it is a real bargain.  We recommend that if you go for this route, that a good investment is a 3 month pass to start off with.  If you shop around, you can get it for cheap around $30 or so, but if you follow this link here, you can get the first month for $1.

Xbox Gift Card –  For those gamers that already have the Game Pass or the , you can go in the direction of getting a digital gift card. Believe it or not, most gamers will love a digital gift card as they are not forced to just purchase a game but a variation of things for the digital game store.  Why this is a great gift is because the gifted can choose to either get a new game, new DLC, or anything else the digital store offers.  If you are not sure what demonization to give it is best to follow this rule.  For any new games, it is best to give $65 so it covers the cost and any tax that comes with the digital purchases.  For those younger gamers that play games like Fortnite or any other MMO style games, a digital gift card of $25 is a safe bet to go with (as most digital games are from $4.99-$19.99).  If you have a gamer that is not sure of what they want then going in increments of $10-40.  Here is a link to help you with the best gift card.

PlayStation 4 Gamers

PlayStation Plus Menbership –  For those that are getting a PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 4 Pro, being online is just as important as a controller, so give the best gift and get them a year of online gaming.  The price is around $59.99 for a year, but you can give different amounts from a 6 months to even a starter pack of 3 months.  Now as different regions are different with pricing, it is best to go onto the site and see the prices for your region.  Here is a link to start off with to get this great gift.

PlayStation Now – Now for those that have a PlayStation 4 and the plus membership, PlayStation Now is a great gift.  With games spanning from the PS2 through the PS4 games it is a great gift for gamers that love to play different games on the same console.  Just like the Xbox One Game Pass this is a “Netflix” style of download, play, best and uninstall.  No fuss, mess and if they don’t like the game, then they can delete the game and choose another.  We recommend purchasing a 3 month pass and let the gamer try out the service, however you can go with a 6 and one year pass as well.  Here is the link to get started with to get the PlayStation Now.

PlayStation Store Gift Card – Just like the Microsoft game store online, Sony also sells digital games on their storefront.  We recommend if you already know that want a AAA blockbuster game that its best to go with a $65 gift card.  This amount will cover the cost of the game and any local tax that comes with the purchase.  Again for those gamers on your holiday list that are not sure of what they will purchase, it is from our experience that getting either an $20-$40 gift card.  This amount allows the gamer to choose from DLC to other games in the store.  Also this amount will allow gamers to pre order or pay off other games in the store and is a great gift for PlayStation gamers.  Here is a link to get started for the gift cards.

Nintendo Switch Gamers

Nintendo Switch Electronic Gift Card – When it comes to Nintendo, they still rely on physical purchases and their digital presence is still building.  However for those that own a Nintendo Switch in your holiday list, the best gift to get them this year is a gift card.  One of the best reasons why is that with Nintendo’s growing 3rd party of games that is being released, there is a lot of great games available for digital purchase.  We recommend going in increments of $20 and more, as Nintendo is still working out their online store.  You can get started with a gift card here.

PC Gamers and Other Gift Ideas

PC Gamers – For those gamers that are on the PC, Steam is the best place to get the gift cards for those gamers.  As games are so vast on the Steam Store in price, we recommend going with a either $20-$40 dollar amount. This amount allows most gamers to get what they like and try out new games on the storefront.  Here is the link to get the gift card.

GameStop Gift Card –  Gamestop is still the best place to get physical copies of games and other gaming related merchandise.  Now as GameStop’s are available at most locations it is a great choice for any gamer on your holiday list to get a good game or merchandise.  Now GameStop has a lot of sales on both games and merchandise so to play it safe, we recommend to get a gift card that is around $30-$50 as this is a safe amount as it covers most things at GameStop.  Now if you know that the gamer wants a specific game then we recommend going with either $55 or $65 for the gift card. You can visit this link here and get the gift card.

For younger gamers on your list.  We highly recommend with Amazon as their have free 2 day shipping and lots of digital titles ready for download.  They also have great collectibles at most times you can find really cheap on their site.  Unless you know what they want, we recommend anything that is around $20-$50 range.  This covers a lot of games and collectables on the site and with free shipping or instant download this is a great gift for most younger or older gamers.

Now we know that the holidays can get crazy but we hope that for last minute gifts that this guide will help you find the best gift for those gamers on your list!
