General Gameplay
Purple Chicken Spaceman is an old school, 2D, side scroller, style of shooter where you control a purple chicken spaceman and fight off an number of enemies till you reach the boss at the end of the level. The game gives you 3 lives with unlimited continues for each level, where you can collect more power ups like shields and bombs that carry over from playthroughs. The Game Visuals for Purple Chicken Spaceman are like seeing a Saturday morning cartoon in motion. Everything in this game is perfectly drawn to showcase all detail from the game character, enemies, backgrounds and even effects. This game is a joy to see in motion and you can see that the developers took time into making every graphic in the game feel very cartoonish in its visual presentation. The game does not support a colorblind mode, however as the colors of the game graphics are bright and vivid enough to see without any problems. In our playtest, we did not encounter any issues with the game graphics as they are very family friendly. The Audio in the game is a great selection of great background music, and sound effects that match the level and feel of the game. All the sounds from your character egg fire, to enemies’ sound effects are perfectly hear without any distortion. This game has such a great soundtrack that the cover song of the opening level will be stuck in your head. As the game does have spoken dialog, there is nothing offensive in the game audio for younger gamers to hear. In our playtesting everyone in our testing group loved the games audio and game soundtrack. Controls for Purple Chicken Spaceman are very easy to use in the game. As the game is a side scroller shooter in its design, the left thumb stick controls the character, while the A button is for shooting. The triggers are used for your bomb and the shoulder buttons push at the same time for your shield. The game controller setup makes it easy for anyone to pick up and play the game without any trouble. The settings are great as most veteran and new gamers alike will not have any problems playing the game. In our playtesting, we did not have any issues with the game controller setting or in game controls as the in game controls are very responsive and tight for a game like this. As the game was tested with the Xbox One default controller, there is no need for any special controller to play Purple Chicken Spaceman.

Family Friendly
When we first got a review copy from the developers that the first thing that came to our minds were how hard the game was going to be? Was it going to be as difficult as Cuphead? Or even as any of the Dark Souls games? Would this game cause frustration in younger or older gamers alike because of the brutal difficulty? Well the answer is yes and no, however let me explain. Purple Chicken Spaceman is a hard game. It took us over a dozen times just to pass the first level, but with the trial and patience, we learn how the game worked, enemy and boss patterns and beating the first level boss felt rewarding as our testers felt a sense of accomplishment of fighting a hard fight and going onto the next level. I will say this; Purple Chicken Spaceman is a fun game but it a very hard game for non-shooter fans. Shooter fans in your gaming library will love the challenge that the game will give and that one of the major advantages is that any power ups that you do not use in the level will carry over, making the game a little bit easier towards more challenging parts of the level. Now if you do have a gamer in your gaming family that does get frustrated easily at games, then Purple Chicken Spaceman may not be for them, or if they go into the game understanding that there is a lot of trial and error before taking on the boss and having a good strategy in place to win, then they will better enjoy this great game. What makes Purple Chicken Spaceman such a great game is that all the graphics, audio and control work well with each other and that to be honest it is a fun game to play. In our special needs game testing, outside of the hard difficulty for the game, we did not run into any issues with the game graphics, audio or even controls. If anything, our testers loved the soundtrack of the game and it was a blast to play here in the office.

Purple Chicken Spaceman is a fantastic old school style of shooter. With a brutal but rewarding difficulty, great graphics, fantastic soundtrack and overall gameplay, this is a must have game for any shooter fans in your gaming family.
