Tetris 99

Battle with 99 other players online in this Tetris game where you must out block your opponents and win against other gamers.

General Gameplay

This is Tetris but on steroids, lol.  The only difference is that you are up against other online gamers to play for first place.  There are no teams, just you and others.  The Game Visuals for Tetris 99 are very bright and vibrant for the game.  As this is a Tetris game, the same prime colors for the blocks are there from the red, blue, green, and other colors that you are used to seeing in every Tetris style games.  The game graphics are basic at best, but it gets the job done.  There is a lot of fast blinking lights to show you who got eliminated and lots of graphics information going on where for some gamers it can get overwhelming.  In our playtesting, we did not outside of the fast flashing lights in the game encounter any graphic issues.  Audio for the game is also very bare bones.  There are sound effects for the pieces dropping and the Tetris original score playing but more in a “gameshow style” to give more of a gameshow feel to the game.  Outside of this, there was noting special about the sound in the game.  As the game does not have any spoken dialog, there was nothing offensive to the game, however as the game is online based, parents please use caution allowing younger gamers when going online with the Nintendo app to hear others and the language.  Controls for Tetris 99 are made to be simple for play.  A button to twist the piece, a hold button to hold a piece, the left thumb sticks to move the pieces, and the right stick to choose who to attack once you make lines and have them added to.  Then controls may seem hard at first, but once you play the game for a couple of times.  It will make sense.  In our playtesting, we did not encounter any issues with the game being played on either the Joy-Conn or the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.

“Tetris 99 takes a battle royal approach to its game style and it works. It makes for a fun fast pace game that can be enjoyed by all.”

Family Friendly

One of the fun and only aspects of the game is that the game is you vs 98 online people in Tetris.  The game is very fast paced and fun, and it also does not last long in between matches.  Most matches last around 5-7 minutes based on skill and once you are done weather first or last place, most matches start right back up quickly.  Tetris 99 is a fun game, however one top thing to keep in mind that it is the game is online only.  There is no offline component what so ever to play.  So, if you have the Nintendo Online service, this is the only way to play the game.  If you do not, you can still pick up the game for free, but you will not be able to play either single or multiplayer game.  In our opinion if you have the online system it is a great, fun game to have.  This game is especially fun for those that love to play the battle royal type of games as the thrill of “you vs the world” style of gameplay is there.  So again, if you have the Nintendo Online Service, this is a must have game, if not, download it anyway as it is free and have a great game for your digital library.  In our special needs game testing.  We did not encounter any issues with the game graphics, audio, or even controls.  The game is very special needs friendly and we highly recommend it.

Closing

Tetris 99 is a great online game for those that are looking to take on the world in Tetris.  The “battle royal” style of gameplay makes it more fun to play.  Remember that you will need Nintendo Online Service to play the game.
